Portable Stethoscopes

Portable stethoscope, c. 1890 with the parts screwed together and taken apart. The two stem pieces fit into the two holes in the ear piece for easy carrying.

Brass monaural stethoscope with a swivel joint for portability, circa 1890. On the right the stethoscope is upright and on the left the swivel joint is bent at a right angle for carrying.

Quain telescoping stethoscope where the chest-end screwed onto the stem ear-end for auscultation and could be unscrewed for ease of carrying, circa 1880. The  photos show the two parts screwed together for auscultation and the chest-end screwed on top of the stem ear-end for carrying.
