Several organizations deal with the history of medicine, and there are many places to visit on the internet. However, there are just a few sites that are devoted to medical instruments. Click on the underlined link to take you to the site.

The Museum of Historical Medical Artifacts is a terrific new site that displays over a thousand photos of medical instruments representing a wide range of medical practice and craftmanship, with a wonderful collection of stethoscopes.

The Wellcome Museum Image Library is a particularly nice site because it has images of a wide array of medical antiques and especially an extensive collection of stethoscopes.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine has a Historical Collections division that includes artifacts documenting the material culture of medicine, with an emphasis on military medicine and federal government medicine dating back to the civil war.

National Museum of American History (Smithsonian) since its establishment in 1846 has collected a wide range of historical artifacts to preserve for the American people an enduring record of their past. They have more than 1.7 million objects and 22,000 linear feet of archival documents in their collection, including medical and surgical artifacts.
